ISTANBUL, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Some 18 people including coal mine executives were detained in the Soma mine in western Turkey on Sunday as part of the investigation into the tragic coal mine accident.
The Soma Coal Mine Company's operating manager Ramazan Dogru and its chief engineer Ak n Celik are among the detained company officials. Prosecutors have sent five of the suspects to court, demanding their arrest, according to local NTV news report.
The worst mine accident claimed 301 lives, according to Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz.
Meanwhile, the entrance of the mine has been closed with a brick wall, after the authorities called for an end to rescue works. Only inspectors and prosecutors investigating the accident are allowed to enter the vicinity of the mine.
All mining activities have also been halted upon a decision by the Turkish Labor Inspection Board.
The coal mine explosion happened on May 13. Most deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident is the worst such disaster in Turkish history.
Turkey has announced a three-day mourning period for victims of the mining accident.
