BUCHAREST, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The strategic partnership with the United States is Romania's third political achievement after NATO and EU accession, President Traian Basescu stressed Wednesday.
"I affirm that after Romania's entry into NATO and the EU, the Strategic Partnership for the 21st century is, for us, the third political accomplishment after the Revolution," Basescu told a joint press conference after meeting with visiting U.S. Vice President Joe Biden at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
According to him, the main subjects on the agenda of bilateral and regional cooperation were approached during his talks with the U.S. vice president.
"We discussed the vulnerabilities of the Black Sea," specified the president, adding that they also analyzed the excessive dependence of Russian gas.
Basescu hailed the firm commitment of the U.S. to Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, the principle of collective defence.
Biden praised Romania's decision to increase the defence budget to 2 percent of the GDP. The U.S. vice president believed that the additional allotments this year represented a step forward for Romania and for NATO.
Biden also mentioned "stronger sanctions to Russia, if Russia undermines the Ukrainian elections."
Biden arrived in Bucharest on Tuesday afternoon for a two-day official visit.
